7 Techniques to Improve Your Mobile App’s User Experience

There are millions of apps available on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. This means that regardless of what your app does, there’s sure to be a healthy level of competition. With so many options available, mobile app users won’t bother wasting their time with apps that don’t provide a great user experience (UX).

If you want to make sure people are blown away by your app, you need to focus on implementing these seven techniques to improve your mobile app’s UX.

1. Personalize the Experience

Everyone wants to feel special and stand apart from the crowd. Give your users this positive feeling by personalizing the UX. There are several ways you can personalize the experience, and what works best is primarily dependent on the type of app.

Regardless of the app type, it’s always a nice touch to greet the user by name each time they launch your app. You should also personalize the experience wherever possible when it comes to what information to display. Use app usage habits, location, and demographics to personalize the home screen or dashboard to best suit each user.

2. Focus on Usability

Your app interface should be intuitive and clean. If the user struggles to navigate your app or has difficulty accomplishing tasks within the app, this provides a negative experience. Such an experience is certain to drive users away.

Avoid this by putting a lot of thought into the way the UX design enhances the user experience. For example, if an icon can be clicked, make it very clear in the icon design and placement. Don’t make it blend in so it becomes indistinguishable from the rest of the app design.

It’s also important for the UX to be consistent across all screens to increase usability. If you can press and hold items on one screen to bring up more information, make this work on all screens.

3. Keep User Input to a Minimum

When users register for an account, go through checkout, or do anything else in your app that requires the input of information, you need to keep this as succinct as possible. Only ask for the minimum amount of information necessary. It makes for a very poor user experience if people need to spend too much time entering their life story into what should be a simple sign-up form.

4. Onboarding: Be Efficient

When someone downloads and launches your app for the first time, it’s important to have some form of onboarding. A brief slideshow that showcases your app’s most critical features is a good way to give your users a feel for what your app can do for them.

However, don’t make it too long and drawn out or you risk losing the attention of your target audience. For the best user experience, you need to find the optimal balance of providing enough information during onboarding without going into information overload.

5. Offer In-App Assistance

If users have questions, the process of finding the answer should be simple. Don’t rely on users having to go outside of the app to find the information they need; chances are high they won’t be back if that happens.

Chatbots are one great way of offering in-app assistance. There’s a reason chatbots have become so popular. Users like being able to get an instant answer to any question they have about your app, so implementing this quick access to assistance is critical to designing a great UX.

6. Display Data in Visual Formats

If your app provides data for the user, don’t just show this in list form. Take advantage of visual representations of data such as charts, graphs, and infographics. For example, if you have a fitness app that allows users to log their weight, provide the history of their weight in a clean-looking graph rather than a simple list of dates and weights.

This visual representation of data will save users time, greatly enhancing the UX.

7. Conduct User Testing

Always make sure your app is tested by users before launch as well as during redesign. Getting feedback from users is vital to improving the user experience. Perhaps you think the navigation is simple, but you observe testers hesitating and struggling to navigate. This should give you an idea of where improvements to the UX can be made.

Improving Your Mobile App’s UX

When two or more apps have similar functionality, the one with the better UX is likely to become that user’s app of choice.

Understanding what makes a great UX can be complicated, but following the techniques above, you’ll be well on your way.
